Benefits of Walnuts

You may have already heard about the high antioxidant content in superfood like Goji Berries and Kale, but what you may not know is that walnut is actually highly packed with Antioxidant as well. According to a study from USDA, Walnuts, and Pecans, is on the top of pyramid in term of antioxidant content and capacity among tree nuts (click here to read more). Antioxidant protects our cells from damages causing by free radical, which is found to be the cause of ageing and many serious diseases including cancer. Studies have shown that high consumption Walnuts may help reducing the risk of breast cancer (you can find one of the papers here).

Walnuts, like many other nuts and seeds, are rich in unsaturated fatty acid, which is also considered as 'good' fat. Fat is needed for healthy nerve cells which makes it an essential nutrient especially for infant and children whose nerve system is still developing. Furthermore, unsaturated fatty acid is also a good energy source, which is lower in calories but as satisfying as saturated fat.

Walnuts also contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is anti-inflammatory and may prevent the formation of pathological blood clots. This associate with better cardiovascular health and actually people who have high ALA diet are less likely to have fatal heart attack.

核桃跟其他的堅果及種子一樣含豐富的不飽和脂肪酸,是'好的'脂肪。脂肪支持人體日常運作,而且健全的神經系統發展亦需要脂肪,因此嬰兒及兒童特別應該涉取足夠的優質脂肪。另外,不飽和脂肪和其他脂肪一樣富飽腹感但熱量比飽和脂肪低,適合關注體重人士。

核桃亦含α-次亞麻油酸(ALA),具抗炎及減低不正常血塊凝固的風險,而研究亦顯示餐單中含高ALA量的人士比較不容易發生致命的心臟病
